There’s a room in our house that still isn’t finished.
If you came over, we'd probably point out everything we'd still like to do. The projects that are waiting, the details we haven't quite figured out yet.
And then we'd realize we've spent the entire evening there.
It's our kitchen.
Or maybe more accurately, it's everything that happens around it.
It's where we eat dinner. Where we watch TV. Where backpacks, laptops, grocery bags, and half-finished cups of coffee somehow all end up in the same place.
It's where everyone gathers without thinking about it.
The funny thing is, we have other rooms. Beautiful rooms, even. But somehow we always find ourselves back in the kitchen.
Maybe it's because it opens so naturally to the backyard. Maybe it's because someone is always making coffee or grabbing a snack. Maybe it's just because kitchens have always been the heart of a home.
As designers, people often assume our house is perfectly finished.
The truth is, the room we use the most is also the one that's still evolving.
And we've stopped apologizing for that.
There's something comforting about a room that's lived in. One that's collected evidence of everyday life instead of trying to hide it.
The counter that always has something on it.
The chairs that never seem to get pushed all the way in.
The shoes by the back door.
The family member wandering in to ask a question while you're making lunch.
Those little moments are what give a house its character.
We've realized over the years that a home isn't defined by the rooms that are finished.
It's defined by the rooms people can't seem to leave.
For us, that's always been the kitchen.
It's where stories are told, plans are made, snacks are shared, and ordinary Tuesday evenings somehow become the moments you remember years later.
Maybe the goal was never to finish every room.
Maybe it was simply to create one that everyone wanted to be in.
