Originally written during a season of transition and growth for Asher + Rye, this reflection still feels especially relevant today. As routines shift and life continues moving quickly, we’ve found ourselves returning to the same reminder again and again: make room for what matters most.
As Rye heads back to school each year, there’s always a moment where we’re tempted to ignore the calendar entirely.
Close the laptops. Leave the book bag on the hook. Head to the beach instead. Stay out too late on a Sunday night. Extend summer just a little longer.
Maybe it’s because the past few years reshaped the way we think about time. Or maybe it’s simply part of getting older and realizing how quickly seasons move. Either way, we’ve found ourselves thinking less about perfect routines and more about creating a life that actually feels meaningful while we’re inside of it.
Over the last few years, so much has changed for us personally and professionally.
We moved Asher + Rye into its new home at Jones and Whitaker. We opened the café. We expanded into gardening, clothing, and new collections for the home. We grew our team, formed meaningful partnerships throughout Savannah, and watched this little corner evolve into something far bigger than we originally imagined.
But alongside all of that growth came something quieter too: perspective.
We’ve become more aware of the time we spend with friends and family. More appreciative of our community here in Savannah. More connected to the makers, artists, and creatives who shape the world around us. We’ve watched people adapt, pivot, rebuild, and create beauty even during uncertain seasons.
And through all of it, we’ve learned a few things that feel worth carrying forward.
Embrace your people whenever you can. Don’t wait for the perfect moment.
Have friends over anyway. Even if dinner is just crackers and cheese, and the house isn’t clean.
Make space in your life for the unknown by simplifying what you can control.
Roadmaps change. Plans shift. Learn to enjoy the process anyway.
Take the trip. Stay up late. Pull your kids out of school for no reason once in a while. Time is precious, and there’s no rulebook for building a beautiful life.
We’ve also learned that home has very little to do with perfection.
It’s the conversations around the table. The candle is burning in the kitchen after everyone’s gone home. The impromptu walk through the neighborhood. The feeling of gathering, resting, reconnecting, and slowing down long enough to actually notice your life while you’re living it.
That philosophy has shaped so much of what Asher + Rye has become over the years.
The shop. The café. The garden. The gatherings. The objects we bring into the space. Even the way we approach design itself. We’ve become increasingly drawn to things that make everyday life feel softer, slower, warmer, and more connected.
Looking back now, we realize that many of the routines and expectations we once treated as fixed were never fixed at all. Life changes. Priorities evolve. Definitions of success shift.
And maybe that’s a good thing.
Maybe redefining normal is part of growing.
As we move into another season — school routines, changing weather, fuller calendars, and all — we’re trying to hold onto the things that matter most: community, gathering, rest, creativity, family, and the simple rituals that make a house feel like home.
And with that, we wish you a beautiful season ahead.
